Tuckpointing & brick repointing in NYC
Mortar is meant to be the part of a brick wall that wears out. When joints crack, wash out or go sandy, water gets into the wall. Tuckpointing (repointing) replaces that mortar before the brick itself starts to fail.

What tuckpointing means in NYC
Here, tuckpointing, pointing and repointing are used interchangeably for cutting out deteriorated mortar and replacing it. Strictly, traditional tuckpointing also adds a thin contrasting ribbon on the joint; if that historic look is what you want, ask us about it.
Joint assessment
Checking which walls and joints have failed, how deep, and why (water from above, a failed parapet, or simply age) before we price anything.
Cutting out failed mortar
Removing deteriorated mortar to sound material and a consistent depth, without widening joints or chipping brick edges.
Compatible mortar
Choosing a mortar that matches the existing joints in color and texture and is not harder than the brick, which matters on older, softer brick.
Repacking & tooling
Packing new mortar in layers and tooling the joints to a profile that sheds water and matches the wall.
Parapets, chimneys & FISP scopes
Spot repointing of parapets and chimneys, full-wall repointing, and repointing specified in Local Law 11 / FISP reports and parapet observations.
When to call
- Mortar that is recessed, crumbly or sandy when you rub it
- Stair-step cracks running through the joints
- Missing mortar around windows, sills and lintels
- Loose bricks, especially at parapets and chimneys
- Efflorescence (white deposits) or damp spots on interior walls
- A FISP report or parapet observation that calls for repointing
Common questions
Tuckpointing vs. repointing: what’s the difference?
In NYC the words are used interchangeably for replacing deteriorated mortar. Traditional tuckpointing is technically a decorative technique with a fine contrasting line on the joint; most NYC jobs are straightforward repointing.
Can you repoint just part of a wall?
Yes. Spot repointing the parapet, chimney or the worst area is common. Full-wall repointing makes sense when joints have failed across the wall.
Why not use the hardest mortar available?
Mortar harder than the brick can push stress into the brick and cause spalling. A compatible mortar lets the joint, which is easy to renew, take the wear.
Does tuckpointing need a permit or scaffold?
It depends on the building and the height of the work. Higher work often needs scaffolding or a rig, DOB permits and sidewalk protection. We’ll go over it during the estimate.
